The Blum Center in The New York Times

The Blum Center’s People’s Guide to UCSB’s Housing Crisis is featured in The New York Times. An October 25, 2026 article on the cost of attending the University of California cites the 85-page guide, which the Center published in 2024, in its account of student housing at UC Santa Barbara. The article reports that UCSB lists an all-in price of $50,946 this year for new in-state students living in a residence hall, and that housing, even in university-owned buildings, can cost students more than tuition and fees.

The article also features Nicole Meng, the Center’s student team leader, who describes the scramble UCSB students face each fall to find deposits, roommates and a place to live in Isla Vista. And it quotes Professor Gaye Theresa Johnson, Director of the Blum Center and Professor of Black Studies, on the university’s responsibility to house its students.
