In our third installment of Underrepresented Communities, we've focused on Indigenous communities in the US. Some are facing relatively high mortality rates, as much as 8xs as high as the White population in certain communities. The Navajo Nation, for instance, has officially surpassed New York and New Jersey for the highest per-capita rate of infection, but at the same time is testing more vigilantly than the rest of the US—with 15.64% of its population having been tested. While the US government has acknowledged these challenges by allocating $8 billion dollars in funding to Native American communities, only 60% of it had actually reached the tribes by mid-May. It should be noted that the terms Native, Indigenous, and American Indian are used across these posts, reflecting the terms used in the sourced articles. Join us tomorrow, as we explore reasons why these stark inequalities across communities exist and where to look for answers. All sources can be found on linktr.ee/UCSBBlumCenter.
