Congratulations to Katalina Vang, Amy Talbot Leach Award Recipient

This was the inaugural year of the undergraduate Minor in Poverty, Inequality, and Social Justice (MPISJ). This Minor is offered by the Department of History. It is also affiliated with the Blum Center. Students pursuing this Minor complete interdisciplinary coursework focused on these issues, as well as an internship and associated capstone project. Katalina Vang, a newly graduated MPISJ student, recently received the History Department's Amy Talbott Leach Award, which supports a History Department major or minor engaged in social justice efforts. Katalina received this award in recognition of the work she completed through her internship with the National Immigration Forum in Washington D.C., which fulfilled her MPISJ internship requirement. "I am a 4th-year Political science major. I plan on going to law school once I graduate.

At my internship, I was an Integrations Programs intern at the National Immigration Forum in Washington D.C. My supervisors and I worked with green card holders to help expedite their citizenship process. This was achieved by implementing English learning workshops and providing free legal information/assistance sessions. This was a super rewarding internship and it helped me gain a better grasp of how we can help marginalized communities. Seeing and hearing how the programs/workshops we implemented have helped individuals who took advantage of our programs/workshops gives me hope that there can be good change in the world."
